Microsoft users have noticed authentication problems around the world on various company services, which has made it especially impossible for them to log into Teams and the Azure portal. The main cause appears to have been a problem with Azure Active Directory, which Microsoft indicated in a status statement (https://status.azure.com/en-us/status/history/). The problems would have started yesterday 15 March at 19:15 UTC (16h15, Brasília time) and ended at 0625 today. “A subset of customers may experience authentication problems with Microsoft services, including the Azure Portal,” said Microsoft. “The engineering teams have been engaged and are investigating.”
In a separate statement, Microsoft confirmed that “Office and / or Dynamics, Xbox Live and … other Azure services / offerings that rely on authentication infrastructure can have a greater impact.”
Many people online reported that Teams was totally inaccessible, and in some cases it was accessed but without some features like recording. Users were asked to reconnect, but the Teams page was stuck with authentication. Users around the world reported that Teams meetings were inaccessible.
Users also reported that the remote desktop also appeared to be affected, making remote access to corporate systems impossible. Microsoft initially said that a correction could be in place by 5:25 pm, but that deadline has not been met.
“We identified an issue with a recent change to an authentication system,” the company said in an update. “We are reversing the update to mitigate the impact.”
He later added that “the process for reversing the change is taking longer than expected.”
The problem was finally “largely mitigated” at 6:25 am today.
Microsoft instructed affected users to log in to their admin center to view information about the outage; however, many reported not being able to authenticate themselves to gain access to the center and its notifications.
