Since Monday, the data center of the Paraguayan Ministry of Education has been offline due to a ransomware attack, according to the country’s media. The attack apparently encrypted essential files and took down the services of internal and external portals and systems. Paraguayan newspapers say that the cybercriminals are asking for 16 Bitcoins to provide the cryptographic key that would decrypt the damaged data.
A statement from the Ministry’s technology director says that the internal and external technical team is working to determine alternative solutions and restore services as quickly as possible. The newspaper ABC Color reported that the incident puts all of the Ministry’s information at risk and claims that there is no backup available. According to the newspaper, the data center stores information such as data on administrative staff, teachers, the Single Student Registry (RUE) and the entire MEC Educational Information and Management System.
