Washington state’s court network suffered widespread disruption following a cyber attack on Sunday, the Washington State Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) said. According to AOC, the attack required the immediate protection of critical systems, affecting the availability of several services. The situation was communicated by the agency on social media, asking for the population’s understanding of access problems that may occur during the restoration of systems.

The attack, which began on Sunday, impacted several state courts, including Pierce County District Court and Superior Court, according to an official statement from the county. Even with the interruption, essential court operations continue, although some services are limited. Pierce officials explained that the incident caused restrictions, but most proceedings were held with minimal interference.

On Monday, the Pierce County Superior Court Clerk’s Office reported that electronic access to court records and balance information on fines and judgments were among the most impacted services. However, the registry office stated that it would maintain in-person and online service to minimize inconvenience to citizens.

An AOC representative highlighted that there is no indication that the attack was specifically targeted at Washington courts, but preferred not to disclose further details for security reasons. The priority, according to the agency, is the safe and rapid restoration of systems, a measure that is already underway.

Furthermore, the attack mainly affects courts that use state case management systems. Those operating with their own systems were not affected, according to the AOC. While recovery work continues, authorities warn of possible difficulties in accessing services in the coming weeks.
