DarkMarket, one of the biggest illegal markets on the dark web, was overthrown by Europol over the weekend after the arrest of a 34-year-old Australian who lived in Germany. According to the corporation, the individual was responsible for the biggest online bazaar on the dark web.

According to Europol, DarkMarket had almost 500 thousand users, among them 2,400 vendors, who advertised a variety of illegal products, including medicines, drugs, counterfeit money, credit cards, cloned SIM chips, malware and more.

The European Union police identified that the site carried out more than 320 thousand transactions. “More than 4650 Bitcoins and 12800 Moneros were transferred… At the current rate, corresponds to an amount exceeding € 140 million (almost R $ 1 billion) ”, writes the police in a press release, published this Tuesday (12).

The site was shut down in an international operation involving the European police service, Europol, which is based in the Netherlands, in partnership with the police in Germany, Australia, Denmark, Moldova, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The alleged leader of DarkMarket was arrested at the border between Germany and Denmark over the weekend. The operation also seized the site’s infrastructure: more than 20 servers located in Moldova and Ukraine.

“The investigation allowed officers to locate and close the market, shut down servers and learn about criminal infrastructure – more than 20 servers in Moldova and Ukraine supported by the German Federal Criminal Police Station (BKA). The stored data will give investigators new leads to investigate moderators, sellers and buyers”, Informs Europol.
