Johnson Zhang is the CEO of GNAME, based out of Singapore. Johnson took the time to answer some questions about GNAME and where he sees the domain industry going in the future.

1) It looks like 2024 has been a solid year for GNAME. Are you happy with how things have gone?

Yes, 2024 has indeed been a solid year for GNAME, and we are satisfied with the current development.

Not only have we strengthened our business stability, but we’ve also made
positive progress in areas such as:

  • technological innovation,
  • customer service,
  • and market expansion.

Moving forward, we will continue to focus on optimizing our core business while exploring new opportunities to maintain long-term competitiveness and sustainable growth. We are looking forward to even greater breakthroughs.

2) You have amassed a large number of registrars for drop catching are you happy with your success in that area?

We are indeed very satisfied with our success in domain name backordering. We’ve been able to provide users with a wide range of choices and high-quality services.

In such a competitive market, helping users successfully register their desired domain names is our continuous goal.

We not only focus on making the backordering process efficient and seamless, but we also strive to provide:

  • the best customer support,
  • post-registration services,
  • and domain management.

User satisfaction and the successful registration of domain names are the driving forces behind our ongoing efforts.

3) One thing you do that I really like is that you require small deposit fees and when an auction occurs you require a deposit and freeze it.

I would imagine you have few non payers since they have had to make a deposit?

You’re absolutely right!

The small deposit requirement and freezing of funds during the auction process are designed to ensure that participants:

  • have a serious intent to purchase
  • and to prevent the waste of resources due to bid withdrawals.

This mechanism has indeed been effective in:

  • reducing non-payment incidents,
  • improving the success rate of transactions,
  • and enhancing overall efficiency.

At the same time, we strive to maintain transparency and fairness throughout the process, ensuring the interests of all participants are protected.

Thank you for recognizing the value of this approach! We will continue to refine our services to provide an even better user experience.

4)What are your thoughts on the domain market as a whole as we head into 2025?

As we approach 2025, I remain optimistic about the overall domain name market.

The continued development of the internet and the ongoing digital transformation will further drive the demand for domain names.

In particular, with the increasing importance of brand building and digital identity for businesses, the demand for unique and brandable domain names will continue to rise.

At the same time, with the introduction of new top-level domains (TLDs), the market will become more diversified. Giving users more personalized choices when selecting domain names.

However, the intensifying competition and the finite nature of domain resources will present challenges in the market.

We need to constantly adapt to these changes, offering more competitive services and innovative solutions to meet the growing needs of users. Overall, despite the challenges, the domain name market still holds great opportunities. Especially with the development of emerging technologies like blockchain, and decentralized networks, which will bring new opportunities and transformations to the domain name space in the future.

5) What are the biggest challenges you face as a domain registrar? What does the future look like for registrars?

As a domain registrar, the biggest challenges we face are primarily in the following areas:

First, market competition is becoming increasingly intense, especially in the backordering of popular and short domain names.

With many competitors and significant price fluctuations, it places high demands on us to offer differentiated services.

Second, the ever-changing and diversifying needs of users. As emerging technologies continue to evolve, particularly in areas like blockchain and decentralized networks, user demand for domain names is shifting.

The traditional domain registration model needs constant innovation to keep pace with these new trends.

Third, security remains a key concern. With the rise of cyberattacks and domain misuse, ensuring the security of domain registration and management is still an important issue.

As for the future of domain registrars, I believe that as digitalization and networking continue to advance, the role of registrars will gradually transform.

Traditional domain registration may become just one part of a larger ecosystem. Registrars may evolve beyond simply offering domain purchase channels to become comprehensive platforms for:

  • managing digital assets,
  • brand protection,
  • and security services.

At the same time, with the development of decentralized networks and blockchain technology, the domain market may shift in new directions. Registrars will likely need to embrace these changes, offering more flexible and innovative products and services.

Overall, the future of domain registrars will not only involve providing registration channels but also supporting digital identity, cybersecurity, and brand management in a more comprehensive and integral way.
